Tips for Registration

Written by Isabella Rusate

Registration for the upcoming fall semester is quickly approaching! In order to keep this experience as stress-free as possible, here are some tips to make sure you get the classes you want and need.

Consult with your advisor

Be sure you schedule an appointment with your advisor. You need to meet with them in order to get clearance to register, but they can also help you stay on the right track. You can also consult your degree audit report found under the “Student” section on the www.my.usj.edu website. This report lets you know your required classes, as well as ones you have already taken.

Explore and filter through classes with the “course search” feature

Before you register, you can look through classes with the “course search” feature. You can filter by departments, course code, time, and more. Different course codes indicate different things: for example, if the course code ends with 60, it’s an online course, and if it ends with 40, it’s an honors course.

Write down your course codes!

This will come in handy come registration day. Be sure to write down the whole code. Don’t just write down “BIOL 100” but “BIOL 100 01.” It would probably also be useful to record the name of the class:

BIOL 100 01 Expl of Careers in the Environment

Wake up on time

Set your alarm! Registration is at 6 a.m. each day. Here are the days for registration:

Monday, April 1st     Graduate students and Honors students

Tuesday, April 2nd     Seniors, PAL students, and Second Degree students

Wednesday, April 3rd     Juniors

Thursday, April 4th     Sophomores

Friday, April 5th     First Years (Current Freshmen)

Monday, April 29th     Summer Non Matriculated students

August, 2024     Fall Non Matriculated Students

Some things to note

You may find it a time saver to enter the course codes rather than search by classes when it comes time to actually pick your classes. Also, I would like to emphasize this next point because I know it has confused many people before, especially during the adrenaline rush that comes with course selection. If you see a class with 19/20 seats, don’t panic! This means that there are 19/20 seats open, not full.

Best of luck to those who will be selecting courses, and congratulations to our graduating seniors!
