Written by Patrick O’Connor
Spring sports are well underway at the University of Saint Joseph, and there has been plenty of action among the various spring sports at USJ. Softball, women’s lacrosse, men’s lacrosse, men’s tennis, and baseball have all had many strong performances.
First, let’s talk about softball. USJ softball is currently 11-10 for the year, and 2-2 against teams in the GNAC (Great Northeast Athletic Conference). USJ softball has a batting average of .352, an on base percentage of .408, and a slugging percentage of .487. They have hit five home runs this season and have 119 runs batted in. The pitching staff has an earned run average of 5.90 and has pitched three shutouts this year.
Next up is women’s lacrosse. USJ women’s lacrosse is currently 6-5 overall with a 2-5 record in the GNAC. As a team, they have scored 142 goals, 38 assists, and have taken 329 shots (with 259 shots on goal). USJ women’s lacrosse is 3-3 at home and 3-2 at away games. They score an average of 12.91 goals per game and have a shots on goal percentage of 78.7. A particularly notable victory this year was when USJ defeated Anna Maria 19-0.
Now, let us move on to men’s lacrosse. Men’s lacrosse is 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the GNAC. The men have scored 117 goals, 70 assists, and have attempted 512 shots (284 on the goal). They also average 9.75 goals per game, have a shots on goal percentage of 55.5, and have gotten 383 ground balls. Similar to the women’s team, one of their biggest wins of the year was against Anna Maria, resulting in an 18-4 victory for USJ.
The men’s tennis team is making a statement during their first year as a varsity program. Men’s tennis is 7-5 overall,
and 1-0 in the conference. Freshman Noah Rivera has shined, winning GNAC rookie/player of the week twice. Freshman Marko Karpyuk has also come out strong, similarly winning GNAC rookie/player of the week. USJ men’s tennis has had three games in a row where they swept their opponents, winning 9-0.
USJ baseball has started their first season at USJ as a club team. The team is currently 4-6, and achieved a big victory against Quincy College, winning 10-1.
USJ spring sports are still underway, and it will be exciting to see how the Bluejays continue to perform on the field.
