“John Dies At The End”, A Book of Endless Sarcasm
Written by Emily Gaudet
“John Dies At The End” is a fantastic book written by Jason Pargin in 2007. A young-adult horror-comedy novel, “John Dies At The End” is full of grotesque wit and unexpected twists. While the beginning of the book can be confusing at first as the reader has to quickly adjust to the style and strange events that happen right away, there is also the sense of being enveloped in the new and mysterious point of view of the protagonist, David Wong. As the reader, you quickly learn that John is David’s best friend and they can both see abnormal things, to say the least. From talking dogs to giant ground-beef monsters to shadow figures, “John Dies at the End” will always keep you on the edge of your seat. The reader is pulled in quickly as David and John explore the ramifications of taking a drug that has changed their worlds forever.
Personally, this book has become one of my all-time favorites. Though I have yet to read the rest of the series, this first edition is a thrilling delve into David’s world of horror and dry comedy. It draws its readers into the book using a blunt and refreshing sense of humor that’s so original, only Pargin could think of some of the jokes written in this book.
Though “John Dies at the End” is by no means a new book, its comedy and strangely profound messages about friendship, loyalty, and the afterlife are more than relevant today. If you are looking for a book that’s immediately interesting and easy to read, “John Dies At The End” is for you.
