13th World Visit

Written by Kaylee Zukowski

On Wednesday, October 30 I had the privilege of visiting Palmer, Massachusetts for a scary event called “13th World.” There are two locations that they listed on their website, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Due to the long drive to Rhode Island, my friends and I decided that the Massachusetts location would be a better fit. They offer two different kinds of access, one being general admission. You can also pay an extra $5 to get the full package which includes the actors being able to touch you or drag you places. At the entrance, they give you a red glow stick necklace that labels you as a customer that is allowing this interaction, though they tell you that you can rip it off at any point during the event if you cannot handle being touched. The only catch is if you rip it off, you do not get a refund. As long as you have the glow stick on you, even in your pocket, the actors are allowed to grab you. This was definitely an interesting experience after previously never being to a haunted attraction, however, it made the night so much more fun! I got dragged away from my group three times which made me more afraid than when I was with my friends going through the event.

At the Mass location, they have multiple attractions and multiple “haunted houses” that you could go into. The longest attraction is called “Moonlight Mayhem,” which features a whole trail which you could walk and experience many kinds of scares in different rooms. Some of the things we saw here were a church, a hotel, a mental asylum, and a butcher. There were many workers who worked to tend to the audience and provide a good scream. One of my favorite parts about this attraction was that at the church the nuns forced you to repent and splattered us with blood. Another was at the mental asylum where an actor had grabbed my friend and threw them into an electric chair, as well as one actor grabbing me and skipping with me while saying “mine!” several times. Of course the chair didn’t shock but rather made loud noises and flashed lights like it was actually shocking the “patient.” I would say the most stressful or scary area was the butchers, where there were pig men with chainsaws that grabbed our group and threw us onto a padded ground. The actors pressed the chainsaws into our backs and stomachs like they were actually cutting us apart, but it was just heavy vibrations coming from inside the machine. It was a crazy experience!!

After experiencing that attraction, you move onto others within the same event. For example, after Moonlight Mayhem we went to the “Prison of Torture” haunted house, which offered a different kind of experience more relating to animatronics screaming and having gruesome injuries. This attraction is quite loud so if you are as sensitive to noise as I am, cover your ears!

There was also the “Hellfire House” where you had to escape without seeing anything at all through fog and darkness, and the “North Pole Nightmare” which consisted of clowns. Unfortunately in the North Pole Nightmare, many of their staff had called out so there was only one person in the attraction that was scaring the visitors. While things happen, it made the attraction my least favorite because there were barely any jump scares or things that were scary. I figured it would be the worst because I hate clowns!

Overall, I really recommend this event and getting the full package which makes the attraction so much more scary!
