Hard at Work

Dear Hard at Work,

You had very briefly written, “I have two fricken jobs and I’m not happy.”

Working multiple jobs to stay afloat is no joke! Whatever field you’re in, going from one job to another while balancing schooling on top of it is not fun. I can only assume you have multiple  jobs to cover financial needs, which is unfortunately common these days. While I cannot tell you exactly what will make you happy, I’ll do my best to give you some pointers on how to manage a large workload while keeping your sanity.

If you are able to, I would consider coordinating at least two days off a week. Sometimes doing so is just not possible financially, but if you’re able to have designated days where you do not have to go into either job, these days could work to help you reset and cool off!

Additionally, there may be areas of your life that you can cut down your spending! Hopefully this will relieve some of your stress. When you get the chance, try to sit down, take a look at your statements, and tally up all of your monthly expenses. If there’s a subscription you hardly use, or extra storage that isn’t being taken up, perhaps you can cancel those charges. Being able to save more money may alleviate some of your distress.

Lastly, it is possible to find some happiness in the small things! Maybe on your drive to work you can practice appreciating the fall weather! The orange, red, and golden tree leaves always help me relax on my way to work. Play your favorite song before you clock in, and when you clock out try to list three positive things that happened during your shift. These exercises may seem silly but subtly changing the way you think about your workplace might make the experience less draining, especially when you’re not in a position in which quitting either one of your jobs is possible.

College is stressful on its own, adding two jobs on top of that would make anyone unhappy! I hope my advice is able to help you and that you get a self care day soon! You deserve one!

Best,

The Banter Bureau
