Concentration

Dear “Williams”,

Thank you for asking such an important question. You asked, “How do I improve my concentration when attending lectures and studying by myself?

I would like to point out that you are not alone; many of us struggle too. It is not always easy to stay focused during lectures all the time, it is even more challenging when studying by oneself. Self-discipline is needed, unfortunately even staying disciplined requires a lot of effort, especially when it comes to staying away from devices such as phones.

Everyone is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. However, many students are distracted by similar factors such as noise, worries, and electronics like phones and computers. One effective way to improve concentration during lectures is to take notes. When you are actively taking notes, it is harder to get distracted because you are following along and making sure you do not miss any important points the professor is making.

Another helpful habit is arriving at class on time whenever possible. Being late can cause you to miss important information and make it harder to catch up. Before the lecture begins, it is a good idea to turn your phone off or put it in silence to avoid unnecessary distractions. Worries can also be distracting, but if you stay engaged and present in the moment, it will be harder for your mind to wander outside concerns.

When studying alone, putting your phone away can greatly improve focus. If the internet is not needed, turning off the Wi-Fi on your computer can also help. This is useful because notifications such as emails can interrupt your concentration. Each time you stop checking a message, it can take time to remember where you left off and regain focus.

Taking breaks while studying is common and important, but the type of break matters. Scrolling through social media is not always a good choice because it can be addictive. Even if you set a timer, it may be difficult to stop and return to studying. Choosing a different type of break, such as stretching or taking a short walk, can help you relax without losing focus. You can do it.

Best wishes,
