Finding Connection Through Service at USJ: McAuley Bingo
By: Ruth Peters
The University of Saint Joseph offers many opportunities for students to participate in community and compassionate service. One such opportunity I have been fortunate to be part of is a monthly bingo event at McAuley, a senior living community just outside campus. Students are asked to arrive early so that they can talk and spend time with the residents. This is my favorite part of the service.
A resident once asked me to simply tell her about myself, something I do not often get the chance to do. It is refreshing to share my interests and experiences while also learning about theirs. I have connected with several residents over my goal of becoming a teacher, as some of them were educators themselves.
When bingo begins, the atmosphere remains light-hearted and relaxed. There are no high stakes or grand prizes like Jay Bucks or an iPad. Instead, residents play for small items such as snacks, tissues, or a USJ lanyard—which the residents wear with pride after choosing it as their prize.
Without the pressure of winning, the environment becomes supportive and enthusiastic. Everyone cheers for the winner and offers encouragement when a number is not called.
The connections formed through this service extend beyond bingo. One resident, a fan of USJ Basketball, frequently attends games. As someone who also attends many games, I have seen her several times and always make a point to say hello, check in, and share a hug.
This service has had such a meaningful impact on my life. It serves as a reminder of the importance of building connections with people of different generations, especially for students who may not see their grandparents often while away at school.
I am grateful I chose to participate and plan to continue throughout the remainder of the semester and my time at USJ. Students interested in joining can email Director of Community Engagement & Spiritual Life Lynnette Colón to be able to have a similar experience.
