Fridge Thievery
Dear Lunchtime Victim,
Thank you for revitalizing our advice column with your question. You asked: “Someone keeps touching my sh*t in the fridge, but they crossed a line by stealing my food recently. It’s my food, and it was rude of them to take it like it was theirs. What can I do without being passive-aggressive or mean?”
Your annoyance is completely justified! There is a major difference between someone moving your leftovers in a community fridge and someone eating food that isn’t theirs. Your lunch is not a community snack!
Because you don’t know who is stealing your food, now is not the time to play detective. Trying to launch an investigation could escalate the situation unnecessarily and cause drama.
First, try labelling your food. Clearly write your name on it to show that it has an owner and is not for anyone else to take.
If that doesn’t work and your food keeps getting stolen, try putting a sign on the fridge. You can say something like: “Please don’t touch other people’s food! Thanks!”
This gets the message across without directly accusing anyone and lets the person know that their behavior has been noticed.
And to whoever is stealing other people’s lunches: Put the sandwich down!
