Paws and Pause – Mercy Week Event Review

By: Ruth Peters

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, Dr. Kaitlin Mondello’s poetry class walked to Saint Mary Home to participate in the Mercy Week event “Mercy on Four Legs” – Learn to Linger.

During the event, USJ students sat with the residents and read poems written by Fr. Frascadore, a late priest of the Archdiocese of Hartford. The poems explored themes of slowing down, lingering, and taking in what is around you. They also connected to animals, specifically dogs, which encouraged the residents to share memories of their beloved family pets.

After each poem was read, small and large group discussions took place. Students and residents shared their interpretations of the poems and personal connections to them. The conversations allowed students to hear stories from the residents while giving everyone the chance to reflect on the poems and their own experiences. A service dog, a beautiful Newfoundland, also made her rounds throughout the event, bringing comfort to and pulling a smile on the faces of all those participating.

“Mercy on Four Legs” offered students a chance to step away from the stress of everyday life and simply sit, listen, and reflect. Rather than rushing from one responsibility to the net, students were able to slow down and be present with the residents, their stories, and the poetry. The experience showed how something as simple as sharing a poem or a memory can create a meaningful connection between people.

For students looking for opportunities to connect with the community, visiting Saint Mary Home or McAuley Home can be a meaningful experience. Spending time with the residents can lead to new friendships, memorable stories, and lessons that stay with students long after the visit.
