CCSU President Steps Down!
By: Aven Gwara
Effective Oct. 1, Central Connecticut State University President Zulma Toro stepped down as university president following allegations of bullying and creating a hostile workspace that left professors and staff concerned about her leadership. Recent filings were nine pages long and outlined 14 alleged violations of the university’s code of conduct.
According to CT Mirror, the incident occurred in August during a CCSU leadership retreat, where Toro “allegedly screamed at an administrator who contradicted her, then screamed at the rest of the staff before cancelling the remainder of the event.”
Following Toro’s resignation, CCSU has decided that completing the report and investigation was no longer necessary. Additionally, CCSU and Connecticut State Colleges & Universities — a system of six public CT colleges and universities — have not yet announced a replacement for Toro.
State Sen. Derek Slap commented on the situation, stating, “It is clear that the vetting process has not worked as intended, and campus stakeholders know what kind of leadership is required to ensure success. I implore the Board to make listening a key piece of their next steps.”
The situation raises questions about university leadership and the responsibility of university presidents to maintain a respectful and productive environment for their campus communities.
