Resident Evil: Was It a Good Adaptation?

By: Addyson Rogers

Resident Evil (2026) is the newest film adaptation of the popular video game franchise. After enjoying the trailer, I went into the film with fairly high expectations. Before watching, I also completed a couple of the video games and watched the CGI movies.

The film follows a medical courier named Bryan, who is tasked with transporting a priority item to Raccoon City, unaware of what lies ahead. I found the protagonist to be very relatable. His reactions reminded me of how I typically act while playing Resident Evil: screaming, swearing, running in circles and pushing forward regardless. Like many of the game’s protagonists, Bryan is simply someone who gets caught up in something bigger than himself. Yet despite receiving no warning or weapons, he still manages to complete the delivery.

As an adaptation, I was pleased with how the film captured the game’s plot and visuals. The set design was particularly impressive; I enjoyed the snowy landscape and the decaying, bloodied hospital. My only criticism was the portrayal of the infection. This may be a minor complaint, but given that the film takes place in Raccoon City, I expected the infected to behave more like those in the second game. However, the infection still fits the film’s setting and story, so I wasn’t disappointed, just a little surprised.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to anyone interested in getting into the Resident Evil games or simply looking for an entertaining horror-comedy.
